Charli D'Amelio

TikTok dancer who became the platform's biggest star

Rejected. It isn’t going to the Arctic.

“She got a Dunkin' drink named after her for dancing a routine someone else made up.”

Why Noah said no

Charli D'Amelio became TikTok's most-followed creator in 2020 by dancing the Renegade, which Jalaiah Harmon had made up. TikTok is already in the Ark, Floss covers a kid's dance taken without credit, and the creator slots are full with PewDiePie and Kai Cenat.

What it is

Charli D'Amelio is a dancer who posted lip-sync and dance videos on TikTok from 2019 onwards, becoming the platform's most-followed creator by 2020. She rose to prominence partly by popularising the Renegade dance to the song Lottery, and expanded into reality TV, merchandise and other entertainment.

Why it’s internet culture

She shows how TikTok turned a teenager doing dances into a global entertainment brand and income stream. Her rise also reveals how the platform's algorithm could make someone famous for doing something simple, and how that fame could then be monetised across every available product category.

In 2020, millions of people made a teenager the biggest name on TikTok for copying popular dances, and brands rushed to sell her name on drinks, mattresses and make-up. The row over the Renegade showed how often dances moved through TikTok while the people who made them up went uncredited.
