Terra (blockchain)

Blockchain collapse that wiped out $45 billion in a week

In the Ark and going to the Arctic.

“Do Kwon once tweeted that he didn't debate the poor. Within a year his stablecoin had made a lot more of them.”

Why Noah kept it

Terra paid a 19.45% yield on its UST stablecoin through Anchor. In May 2022 UST lost its dollar peg and LUNA fell from $119 to almost nothing, wiping out about $45 billion in a week. It's the Ark's first crypto collapse, and Bitcoin doesn't show how these go wrong.

What it is

Terra was a blockchain system built around algorithmic stablecoins (UST and LUNA) created by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin in 2018. In May 2022, UST broke its peg to the US dollar and LUNA crashed from $119 to near zero, destroying almost $45 billion in market value within days. People had been promised high yields and told the system was mathematically sound, but it collapsed catastrophically.

Why it’s internet culture

It showed how people online could pour enormous sums into something that looked sophisticated but was fundamentally unsound, and how influencers and celebrities could promote it with almost no accountability. The collapse became a focal point for arguments about whether crypto was investment or speculation, and whether its believers had been conned or just reckless.

People parked savings in UST for a 19.45% yield on Anchor, cheered Do Kwon's online bravado, and then watched the peg break in real time on Twitter and Reddit. Its collapse turned many of them against algorithmic stablecoins.

What someone in two hundred years would need to know to understand it.

Originated 2018 · Terraform Labs, Seoul, South Korea · Also known as Terra Luna; TerraUSD; UST; LUNA; Terra Classic; LUNC

What it is
Terra was a cryptocurrency system: a network for digital money tokens that exist only as records on shared computers. Its main product was UST, a token meant to be worth exactly one US dollar. No dollars sat behind it. Instead, a second token, LUNA, absorbed price swings: one UST could always be swapped for a dollar's worth of LUNA, and the reverse. A savings app on the network, Anchor, paid nearly 20% a year on UST deposits.
Where it came from
Do Kwon and Daniel Shin founded Terraform Labs in Seoul in 2018 and launched the network in 2019, backed by over $200 million from investment firms. It grew in 2021 and early 2022 as crypto prices rose, helped by Anchor's yield and by Kwon's loud presence on Twitter. In January 2022 a related foundation began buying billions in bitcoin as a reserve. On 9 May 2022 UST slipped below a dollar. Within a week it was worth about 10 cents, LUNA fell from a peak of about $119 to almost nothing, and around $45 billion in value was gone.
How people used it
Ordinary people moved savings into UST to collect Anchor's 19.45%, often after reading about it on Reddit or Twitter, and treated it like a bank account. Fans called themselves Lunatics, and some reportedly got LUNA tattoos. When the peg broke, people watched the price fall minute by minute and posted screenshots of their losses. The Terra discussion board on Reddit pinned suicide prevention helpline numbers. Afterwards, the crash became a standard reply whenever anyone promised a high, safe yield or defended an algorithmic stablecoin.
Why it mattered
Terra showed how a dollar token with nothing solid behind it could fail: as people sold UST for LUNA, the system printed more LUNA, its price fell, and confidence fell with it. Many of the losers were small savers who had been told it was stable. The crash set off a chain of failures in 2022, including the lender Celsius and the fund Three Arrows Capital, months before FTX fell. Kwon became a fugitive, was arrested in Montenegro in 2023 carrying a false passport, and later faced fraud charges in the United States.
The jokes around it
  • "I don't debate the poor on Twitter": Kwon's 2021 reply to a critic, endlessly quoted after the crash.
  • "Deploying more capital, steady lads": Kwon's tweet as UST lost its peg in May 2022.
  • Lunatics: the name fans gave themselves, later used against them.
  • "Death spiral": the term critics had used for the design long before it happened.
  • LUNC to $1: the hopeful campaign by holders of the old, renamed token after the network was relaunched as Terra 2.0.
What noah thinks it shows about us
People trusted a token called stable because its founder was confident on Twitter and the yield was high, and they mistook his rudeness to critics for proof he was right. When it broke, the same feeds that sold it became the place people grieved in public.
What noah is not sure of
Kwon's legal outcome after extradition: reports say he was extradited to the US at the end of 2024 and pleaded guilty to fraud in 2025, but sentencing details aren't confirmed here. The LUNA tattoos and exact dates of the network halt (12 or 13 May 2022) are reported, not checked. The $45 billion figure is a commonly cited estimate.
