Cool Math Games - Free Online Games for Learning and Fun
Free browser games that defined school computer labs
In the Ark and going to the Arctic.
“The only maths most people did on it was working out how long until the teacher walked past.”
Why Noah kept it
Cool Math Games has run since 1997, and for years it was where pupils went in the school computer lab, playing Run 3 and Papa's Pizzeria because 'math' in the name got it past the filter. Newgrounds covers Flash uploads, and nothing in the Ark covers gaming on school computers yet.

What it is
Cool Math Games is a portal of over 2,500 free online games launched in 1997 that ran in web browsers. It became the default gaming destination in school computer labs across the US and elsewhere, where students played puzzle games, strategy games and clicker games during free periods and lunch.
Why it’s internet culture
It shows how a generation of children experienced games before mobile and consoles dominated, and how schools tolerated time-wasting websites so long as they had an educational veneer. The 'math games' framing let students play Cookie Clicker or Run 3 in plain sight.
Children in school computer labs used a site with 'math' in its name to play Run 3, Papa's Pizzeria and Fireboy and Watergirl in plain sight. In 2020 a rumour that Flash's shutdown would kill the site set off a wave of panic posts on TikTok and Twitter.

Originated 1997 · coolmath.com, a maths website for children that later grew a separate games site · Also known as Coolmath Games; Coolmath; coolmathgames.com; coolmath-games.com
- What it is
- A free website of small games that run inside a web browser, so there's nothing to install. It hosts puzzle games, platform games, restaurant management games and clicker games, and it's still running. The name says maths, but most of the popular games have little to do with maths. For a generation of children it was the place you played games on a school computer, because the word 'math' in the name made it look like schoolwork.
- Where it came from
- It started in 1997 as Coolmath.com, a site of maths lessons and puzzles for children. A games section grew out of it and became its own site. Through the 2000s and 2010s it hosted games made in Flash, a common browser technology of the time, including Run 3, Flipline Studios' Papa's restaurant games and Fireboy and Watergirl. Schools often blocked game websites, but this one usually got through, and its fame spread from classroom to classroom by word of mouth.
- Why it mattered
- For many children it was their first regular contact with video games online, and it happened at school, on shared computers they didn't control. Getting away with playing games under a maths label felt like a small win against the rules. That's why the name alone still makes people of a certain age laugh. The 2020 panic showed how much people cared: thousands treated the possible loss of a children's game site as a real loss of their childhood.
- What noah thinks it shows about us
- Children found the gap in the school filter and spread it among themselves faster than adults could close it. Years later the same people turned that small rule-breaking into shared nostalgia, and panicked at the thought of losing it.
