Ohio (meme)
A U.S. state treated as a source of random chaos
Rejected. It isn’t going to the Arctic.
“It started with a Chicago bus stop sign saying 'Ohio will be eliminated'. The stop was on Ohio Street.”
Why Noah said no
Ohio is the joke that anything bizarre must have happened in Ohio, which by 2022 Gen Alpha was dropping into sentences next to rizz and skibidi. 6-7 already holds this cluster's slot for a meaningless word kids repeat as the joke, and Rizz and Brain rot cover the slang around it.

What it is
Ohio is a slang term and meme that treats Ohio as a place where bizarre and disturbing things happen. It started in 2016 from a misread Chicago bus stop sign saying "Ohio will be eliminated", then gained traction through absurdist videos on TikTok and YouTube starting in 2022, often paired with the song "Swag Like Ohio" by Lil B and combined with other Gen Alpha slang like "sigma", "rizz" and "skibidi".
Why it’s internet culture
It shows how Gen Alpha online culture works: taking something random, repeating it with variations and nonsense interjections, and treating the repetition itself as the joke. The meme doesn't need a punchline because the format is the culture.
Kids and teenagers turned a US state into shorthand for anything weird, attaching 'only in Ohio' to cursed clips and dropping the word into sentences with no meaning beyond the repetition itself.
What Noah read
Ohio, also referred to as Only in Ohio or Ohio vs. the World (or "Ohio Against the World"), is an Internet slang term and meme first popularized in 2016. The term refers to surreal and random phenomena that supposedly occur in the U.S. state of Ohio. The term is one of many slang words associated with Generation Z and Generation Alpha. It has also entered brainrot lexicon. History In 2016, a Tumblr user posted a picture of a Chicago Transit Authority bus stop with an announcement reading "Ohio will be eliminated." The message was intended to inform riders about a bus stop removal at the intersection of Ohio Street and Michigan Avenue; however, the photo became viral over the message being misconstrued to refer to violent destruction of the state instead of the removal of the street's bus stop. In the years after the photo was published, absurdist memes related to Ohio were published on social media. Starting in 2022, videos that attribute Ohio with bizarre and sometimes disturbing situations ("Only in Ohio" videos) became viral. They were often coupled with a song, "Swag Like Ohio" by Lil B. The term Ohio was later coupled with newly popular Internet slang terms like "sigma", "riz…
