My Favorite Murder

True crime podcast with comedy and a devoted fan community

Rejected. It isn’t going to the Arctic.

“Every episode still ends with Elvis the cat meowing for a cookie, recorded before he died in 2020.”

Why Noah said no

Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark started swapping murder stories for laughs in 2016, and fans called themselves Murderinos. Serial already covers the true crime podcast boom, and the cluster is full with it and Call Her Daddy, so this stays out.

What it is

My Favorite Murder is a weekly podcast where comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark take turns recounting real murders and true crime stories, then discuss them together. It started in January 2016 and became one of the most downloaded podcasts, reaching 35 million monthly downloads by 2020, and built a named community called Murderinos who attended live shows and engaged online.

Why it’s internet culture

The podcast showed how people online wanted to discuss true crime not as pure horror but mixed with humour and personal vulnerability, especially around mental health. It created a parasocial relationship where listeners felt they knew the hosts and formed a community identity around something dark that they could make jokes about together.

Listeners turned murder stories told for laughs into a fan identity, Murderinos, with live shows, catchphrases and a habit of talking about their own anxiety and therapy alongside the cases.
