Crazy Frog
Swedish CGI frog with engine sound that became an inescapable ringtone hit
Rejected. It isn’t going to the Arctic.
“Crazy Frog sold a lot of ringtones. Old Town Road spent 19 weeks at number one.”
Why Noah said no
Gangnam Style can't leave this cluster, so Crazy Frog would need both Ocean Man and Old Town Road out. Old Town Road is the clearest case of TikTok turning a $30 beat into a number one, and a 2005 ringtone isn't worth losing it for.

What it is
Crazy Frog was a CGI character paired with a two-stroke engine noise, created in 2003 by Swedish animator Erik Wernquist. A cover of "Axel F" became a number one hit across Europe in 2005, and the character was then sold as a ringtone and licensed for merchandise, games and constant advertising that annoyed enough people to prompt complaints to the UK's Advertising Standards Authority.
Why it’s internet culture
It shows how ringtones were a major business in the mid-2000s, where people bought novelty sounds for their phones and shared them by sending files to friends. The backlash against the advertising also captures how the internet was starting to resent being sold to, even when the product was popular.
A teenager's engine noise passed around file-sharing networks as 2TAKTARE.MP3, got a CGI body on a forum, and was then sold back to people as a ringtone. It shows the mid-2000s, when people paid to make their phones play internet jokes and got sick of the adverts for them.
What Noah read
Crazy Frog (originally known as The Annoying Thing) is a Swedish CGI-animated character and Eurodance musician created in 2003 by actor and playwright Erik Wernquist. Marketed by the ringtone provider Jamba!, the character was originally created to accompany a sound effect produced by Daniel Malmedahl while attempting to imitate the sound of a two-stroke engine. The Crazy Frog spawned a worldwide hit single with a cover version of the Beverly Hills Cop theme tune "Axel F", which reached the number one spot in Turkey, New Zealand, Australia and most of Europe. The subsequent album Crazy Frog Presents Crazy Hits and second single "Popcorn" also enjoyed worldwide chart success, and a second album entitled Crazy Frog Presents More Crazy Hits was released in 2006, as well as a third album, Everybody Dance Now, released in 2009. The Crazy Frog also spawned many singles, a range of merchandise and toys, as well as two video games before going on hiatus in 2009. On 22 April 2020, a Twitter account for the character was created, and the account is listed on the official website, Facebook profile and YouTube channel. A new album was announced later that same day. On 10 December 2021, a new s…
