Bleach (TV series)

Shonen anime about a teenager fighting ghosts

Rejected. It isn’t going to the Arctic.

“366 episodes and a lot of filler, but the article never gets to the part where the internet started arguing.”

Why Noah said no

Bleach is a 366-episode Studio Pierrot anime that aired on TV Tokyo and Adult Swim. It got big through television, and this article is plot and casting with nothing about fansubs, filler rows or Aizen's "since when were you under the impression" meme. As with Kamen Rider, that's TV history.

What it is

Bleach is a 366-episode anime series that ran from 2004 to 2012, adapted from a manga by Tite Kubo. It followed a high school student named Ichigo Kurosaki who gained the power to fight spiritual threats called Hollows. The series aired on Adult Swim in the US and became one of the most-watched anime of its era through both broadcast and online fan communities.

Why it’s internet culture

Bleach shaped how English-speaking internet users discovered and discussed anime in the 2000s and 2010s. Fans built forums, wikis and fan art communities around it, and it established patterns for how anime would be licensed, dubbed and shared online that lasted for years. It also showed how a long-running series could hold an audience through filler arcs and debate.

Bleach's English-speaking fans watched fansubs, argued about filler arcs and later turned Aizen's lines into memes. This article is a TV show's broadcast history and plot summary, and it doesn't cover any of that.

The series aired on TV Tokyo and its TXN affiliates from October 2004 to March 2012, spanning 366 episodes. The story follows the adventures of the teenage Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper, a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper, from a Soul Reaper named Rukia Kuchiki. His newfound powers allow him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits called "Hollows" and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. In addition to adapting the manga series on which it is based, the anime features original, self-contained storylines and characters that are not found in the source material. Viz Media obtained foreign television and home video distribution rights to the Bleach anime in March 2006. Bleach was broadcast in the United States on Adult Swim from September 2006 to November 2014.
